Breaking Dawn – Spotlight & Review

Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer

  • Hardcover: 768 pages
  • Publisher: Little Brown and Company ( Aug 2 2008 )
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 031606792X
  • ISBN-13: 978-0316067928
  • ( From Inside Cover )

When you loved the one who was killing you, it left you no options. How could you run, how could you fight, when doing so would hurt that beloved one? If your life was all you had to give, how could you not give it? If it was someone you truly loved?
To be irrevocably in love with a vampire is both fantasy and nightmare woven into a dangerously heightened reality for Bella Swan. Pulled in one direction by her intense passion for Edward Cullen, and in another by her profound connection to werewolf Jacob Black, a tumultuous year of temptation, loss, and strife have led her to the ultimate turning point. Her imminent choice to either join the dark but seductive world of immortals or to pursue a fully human life has become the thread from which the fates of two tribes hangs.
Now that Bella has made her decision, a startling chain of unprecedented events is about to unfold with potentially devastating, and unfathomable, consequences. Just when the frayed strands of Bella’s life-first discovered in “Twilight,” then scattered and torn in “New Moon” and “Eclipse”-seem ready to heal and knit together, could they be destroyed… forever? “

This is the fourth and final book in Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series and after reading about a lot of the “hullabaloo” over the topics brought up in this book and her choice of an ending, I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I wish there were more books coming in this series besides the book Midnight Sun which are the same events in Twilight, but told from Edward’s perspective instead of Bella’s. I love that idea though, and am looking forward to reading that book as well. You can read chapter 1 on Stepanie’s Website.

There were a couple of plot twists that kind of weirded me out in Breaking Dawn, but the rest of the story was awesome! I don’t want to give any spoilers away for those who haven’t had the chance to read it yet, so I’ll just suffice it to say that Breaking Dawn will remain on my Keeper Shelf to be re-read again in the future.

I also just gave my sister the series to read and she’s half-way through Eclipse and LOVING them all so far. She told me that she gets what the big deal about these books is all about now, and she can hardly wait to go and see the movie with me in November. So, I continue to be a huge Stephanie Meyer fan! 🙂

I’m open for discussing details with anyone who wants to, in the comments here, so be warned that there may be SPOILERS in the comments of this post.

The Accidental Demon Slayer – Spotlight & Review

The Accidental Demon Slayer by Angie Fox

  • Mass Market Paperback: 292 pages
  • Publisher: Dorchester / Paranormal Rom ( Jul 7 2008  )
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0505527693
  • ISBN-13: 978-0505527691
  •

    ( From the Back Cover)

“It’s never a good day when an ancient demon shows up on your toilet bowl. For Lizzie Brown, that’s just the beginning. Soon her hyperactive terrier starts talking, and her long-lost biker witch Grandma is hurling Smuckers jars filled with magic. Just when she thinks she’s seen it all, Lizzie learns she’s a demon slayer-and all hell is after her.

Of course, that’s not the only thing after her. Dimitri Kallinikos, a devastatingly handsome shape-shifting griffin needs Lizzie to slay a demon of his own. But how do you talk a girl you’ve never met into going straight to the underworld? Lie. And if that doesn’t work, how dangerous could a little seduction be…? ”

I was lucky enough to win an ARC of this book by ANGIE FOX, and am I ever happy that I did! I believe that this is a debut novel from this author, and she comes into the paranormal romance writing arena with a bang.

This story is so chock full of wonderful, quirky, funny, sexy and scary characters that come to life and the wacky roller-coaster ride goes from start to finish. I LOVED it and hope that there will be more books about Lizzie, Dimitri, and Pirate along with all the other lively characters Ms. Fox has created.

I also have to mention that it was really great to have a 30 year old protagonist for a change, instead of a twenty-something year old. This book is like Bridget Jones mixed in to Buffy The vampire Slayer. Great, great paranormal fun as well as romance, some butt-kicking tension and danger.

    News Around The UF/PR Community

Jennifer Rardin’s fourth book in the Jaz Parks series, BITTEN TO DEATH was released yesterday ( August 12th ). If you’ve had your head in the sand and somehow haven’t managed to come across this series, I highly recommend them. Here’s a blurb from this book… ( From The Publisher)

“Jaz Parks here. My latest mission has taken me to the ancient Greek city of Patras; but instead of soaking up its splendor, I’m here to infiltrate a Vampere Trust. Only two vamps have ever escaped the tightly bound communities and lived to tell the tale: Edward “The Raptor” Samos, the most reviled criminal mastermind in recent memory, and Vayl, the CIA’s number one assassin who also happens to be my boss.

The Raptor is trying to take over Vayl’s former Trust. Unfortunately the Trust’s new leader has her own plans.

This job is going to be the death of me.”

These books can be read as stand alone and you will have no problems following the story, but It’s also much more gratifying if you read from the first book because you’re that much more invested in the characters. That’s just my opinion though.

Here’s the awesome cover of Adrian Phoenix’s second book IN THE BLOOD, which is being released December 30th, 2008 according to Amazon and Chapters. Put it in your wishlist’s or pre-order it, I have!

I’m really looking forward to this book as it continues the story of Heather and Dante as well as all the great characters from the first book A RUSH OF WINGS. I’m not sure if the series has a name yet, but it is a series. I just heard recently that Adrian has been contracted to write books 3 and 4. A Huge big congrats to you Adrian!! I can’t wait to read them. 🙂

In other news, I’ve just heard that Kim Harrison, author of The Hollows/Rachel Morgan books, has a new Young Adult book coming out in May 2009 called ONCE DEAD, TWICE SHY.  You can get a taste of it in the Prom Nights from Hell anthology. I can’t find a cover for it, but will keep you all updated as I find out more.

AMBERKATZE is having a contest to win a copy of Jocelyn Drake’s Nightwalker.

VAMPIRE WIRE is having a contest to win a copy of Carolyn Jewel’s My Wicked Enemy.

And last but not least, you have until Friday, Aug. 15th to ENTER my contest to win a signed copy of Rachel Caine’s Gale Force!

Sucks To Be Me – Spotlight & Review

Sucks To Be Me by Kimberly Pauley

  • Publisher: Mirrorstone ( Aug 26 2008 )
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0786950285
  • ISBN-13: 978-0786950287
  • ( From Publisher)

“Mina Hamilton’s parents want her dead. (Or undead to be precise.) They’re vampires, and like it or not, Mina must decide whether to become a vampire herself. But Mina’s more interested in hanging out with best friend Serena and trying to catch the eye of the too-hot-for-high-school Nathan Able than in the vampire training classes she’s being forced to take. How’s a girl supposed to find the perfect prom date and pass third-year French when her mom and dad are breathing down her neck–literally?”

    ( From Back Cover)

Why It Sucks to Be Me…

    1. My parents are feaks. Sure, every teenager says that. But I know for a fact mine are bloodsucking freaks.

    2. As if high school wasn’t bad enough, now I have to go to vampire classes with a bunch of weirdos who actually want to drink blood.

    3. Then there’s my complete inability to talk in complete sentences around cute boys. (I.E. Nathan. He probably thinks I’ve got a speech impediment or something.)

    4. And I can’t tell my best friend Serena about any of this.

    5. But the absolute worst thing is that some editor at Mirrorstone found this stupid journal I wrote and now the whole world will find out what happened when my parents forced me to decide whether I want to be a vampire! Please don’t read this book, it’s just embarrassing… ”

Mina Hamilton is your everyday teenager, thinking about the usual things that teenage girls do (i.e. boys & school), and the not so usual (i.e. her vampire parents.) She gets slammed with a life-changing decision and not a lot of time to make it!

I found this book to be funny while dealing with the paranormal and the main character is spunky and a little snarky which made for a fun, light read. The vampires aren’t too “dark” and the teens are full of life and quirkiness. A serious decision is made and we go through it with this extremely likable character.

I received this book from Library Thing Early Reviewers and it was a fun read. It’s a Young Adult Paranormal Romance about vampires. This is Kimberly Pauley’s first book and I hope to see some more books from this author because she’s got a great sense of humor and a catchy style of writing.

The Summoning – Spotlight & Review

    The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong

  • Paperback: 400 pages
  • Publisher: Doubleday Canada ( Jul 1 2008 )
  • ISBN-10: 0385665342
  • ISBN-13: 978-0385665346
  • ( From Back & Inside Cover )

Chloe Saunders used to have a relatively normal life.

But Now she finds herself in the middle of some really strange situations:

    • She suddenly starts seeing dead people.
    • She gets locked up in a group home for unstable teens.
    • The group home isn’t what it seems…

My name is Chloe Saunders and my life will never be the same again.

All I wanted was to make friends, meet boys, and keep on being ordinary. I don’t even know what that means anymore. It all started on the day that I saw my first ghost – and the ghost saw me.

Now there are ghosts everywhere and they won’t leave me alone. To top it all off, I somehow got myself locked up in Lyle House, a “special home” for troubled teens. Yet the home isn’t what it seems. Don’t tell anyone, but I think there might be more to my housemates than meets the eye. The question is, whose side are they on? It’s up to me to figure out the dangerous secrets behind Lyle House… before it’s skeletons come back to haunt me.”

Random House was kind enough to send me an ARC of this book, the first in the Darkest Powers trilogy. I quote Kelley Armstrong “Darkest Powers is a young adult urban fantasy trilogy.  It’s set in the same universe as my Otherworld series, but with entirely new characters.”

I am a fan of all things Kelley Armstrong, and her new foray into the young adult urban fantasy genre is no exception! I flat out loved this book and can’t wait for the next in the trilogy, The Awakening which is scheduled to be released May 2009.

Chloe Saunders is your everyday “normal” teen, until she starts seeing ghosts, and not your “needs help crossing to the other side” ghosts, but truly terrifying ones. This story is an awesome tale and told in a way that really draws you in so that you can relate to exactly how it must feel to go through these experiences. I was completely immersed in the world and couldn’t put the book down!

This first book in the trilogy sets the “world” up, takes you on a rollercoaster ride of experience and emotions, has great plot twists, scares you along with the characters, and leaves you wanting more, More, MORE at the end. I personally, found it to be one of the higher calliber of writing in the young adult books that I’ve read. Bravo Ms. Armstrong, Bravo!
