Help For Haiti

Like most people around the world, I’ve watched all the news coverage of the heart-breaking aftermath and devastation that the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti are struggling through. My heart and prayers go out to all the people who are suffering, but that’s not enough. Members of my family and myself are donating to the various charities who are down there and on the ground providing what they can to help Haitians. Believe it or not, your $5.00 or $10.00 or whatever you can afford, WILL make a difference!

Let’s look at some numbers to put it into perspective. Let’s say there are a million people in just my city alone, (which there are and more). Let’s say 25% of those people give $10.00 on average. That’s $2, 500,000.00! From just one city! Two million, five hundred thousand from one city, so yes, your $10.00 does make a difference.

There are those people who don’t think that the money you donate will make it the people in Haiti. Yes, a very small percentage will be used for administrative costs, etc, but the majority of it will go to helping the people. There are many very well established organizations that have been doing this for years and years. You can see them in the news broadcasts from the place in distress, so they are down there doing what they can.

I’m up here in Canada, so I’m going to give you some links to the Canadian organizations where you can donate. If you’re in the States, CNN has a list of organizations to which you can donate. Here are the Canadian links:

Canadian Red Cross

Doctors Without Borders

Oxfam Canada

Salvation Army In Canada

UNICEF Canada

United Nations World Food Programme

World Vision

You can also Text Message in Canada to help Haiti Relief:

Text Haiti to 45678 to donate $5 to the Salvation Army in Canada (Bell/Rogers).
Text Haiti to 85944 to donate $5 to Rescue Union Mission and MedCorp International.
Text Haiti to 25383 to donate $5 to the International Rescue Committee.
Text Haiti to 30333 to donate $5 to Plan Canada.
Text World to 45678 to donate $5 to World Vision.

CBC.ca also lists several other ways and organizations to which you can donate. There are several articles and videos of what’s going on in Haiti on both news sites.

If you’re so inclined, IFAW and WSPA are two really well established organizations who help animal victims in distress in places where disasters have occurred. I personally am a supporter of both IFAW and WSPA.
It breaks my heart to see all the suffering that is happening in Haiti right now. I have nothing but love and respect for all the people who are involved in going down there to provide help and relief to those in need. Doctors, nurses, military personnel, UN peace keepers, pilots, missionaries, security people and all the reporters who are bringing us up to date coverage of the aftermath. May what-ever diety you believe in bless you and keep you all strong.
