Black Magic Sanction – Spotlight & Review

Black Magic Sanction by Kim Harrison

Published:February 23, 2010

The following ISBNs are associated with this title:
ISBN – 10: 0061138037
ISBN – 13: 9780061138034

Book Description:

“In New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison’s most complex and nuanced adventure yet, bounty hunter and witch Rachel Morgan fights a deadly battle-mind, body, and soul

Rachel Morgan has fought and hunted vampires, werewolves, banshees, demons, and other supernatural dangers as both witch and bounty hunter-and lived to tell the tale. But she’s never faced off against her own kind . . . until now. Denounced and shunned for dealing with demons and black magic, her best hope is life imprisonment-at worst, a forced lobotomy and genetic slavery. Only her enemies are strong enough to help her win her freedom, but trust comes hard when it hinges on the unscrupulous tycoon Trent Kalamack, the demon Algaliarept, and an ex-boyfriend turned thief.

It takes a witch to catch a witch, but survival bears a heavy price.”

My Thoughts:

I was sucked in to this book of Rachel Morgan’s journey in The Hollows Series like a leaf into a tornado! Mesmerizing. I couldn’t put it down! Really, I carted my book around like it was an extension of my hand for two days until I finished it.

Rachel goes through and grows through a whole heck of a lot of inner turmoil and outer ones as well. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I laughed, I cried, I cringed, I fell in love with the characters all over again! So many awesome characters: Rachel, Ivy, Jenks, Biz, Al, Pierce, Trent, Lee, and just as many excellent villans: Nick, Brooke, Vivienne, Oliver, and Newt. Ahhh… I wish I had time to read it again right now. Yes, it was that good!

Kim Harrison not only weaves a spectacular tale, she weaves a spell that you never want to end filled with magic, mayhem, rich characters and amazing plots and pacing. I can’t wait for the next book in the series! I can’t find any info about the next book, but I see in her FAQ’s that she has 12 to 13 books planned, so I’m stoked about that. 🙂

Sentinels: Wolf Hunt – Spotlight & Review

Sentinels: Wolf Hunt by Doranna Durgin

Format:Mass Market Paperbound

Published:January 1, 2010

The following ISBNs are associated with this title:
ISBN – 10:0373618271
ISBN – 13:9780373618279

Book Description:

“A majestic wolf prowls the halls of power, protecting his pack of shape-shifters from those who would harm them.” But a wolf is not meant to hunt alone…

Nick Carter hides his wildness under expensive suits, but nothing can lessen the impact of what he is: alpha wolf. He leads his region’s Sentinels, a duty he takes seriously. He is cautious, ready for anything–except Jet. The first time he sees the black-haired, golden-eyed beauty he recognizes a shape-shifter like himself–but like no Sentinel he has seen before.

Jet has been trained by the Sentinels’ dark counterparts for one mission: to take down Nick Carter. If she succeeds, her pack will be freed. If she fails… But the moment she meets the man with pale green eyes, she recognizes a kindred spirit, a male to match the wild nature of her soul. Together, they could be amazing….

But if they do not betray each other, the people they are supposed to protect will die.”

My Thoughts:

I loved it! 😀 I was totally caught up in this world and rooting for Jet and Nick all the way.

This is Doranna’s third book in the Sentinels series and she’s created a wonderfully detailed world of shape shifters and their nemesis, The Core. I haven’t read the first two books in the series, Sentinels: Jaguar Night and Sentinels: Lion Heart, but I had no problems following along or with getting invested in the characters. I’m happy that I have both of the first two books in my TBR though, because they’re about characters that are secondary characters in this book.

I really liked the uniqueness of the character, Jet, her background and struggles to survive and assimilate into an unknown society. Great love story, fast paced plot, truly detestable “bad guy” and a good assortment of truly interesting characters made this a book I couldn’t put down. A great example of what paranormal romance is all about!

Lana Griffin – Guest Blog & Giveaway

Today I have erotic Paranormal Romance author, Lana Griffin, guest blogging about one of my favourite supernatural beings, yep, you guessed it, the Vampire! Think Spike & Angel, Eric Northman, Damon Salvatore, Bones and a whole slew of other uber sexy vamps. There are so many spine tingling dangerous and gorgeous vamps out there, I’m always up for getting to “know” some more. 🙂

Be sure to read all the way to the end as there’s a giveaway too! Let’s give Lana a warm welcome.

Hi, and my thanks to Judi and Sidhe Vicious for hosting me today. (I love the name, Sidhe Vicious!) I’m Lana Griffin, alter ego of a New York Times Best-Selling Author. I’ve written more than 20 books and am currently working on several new novels. Under my real name, I’ve sold more than 6-700,000 books worldwide.

DUSK (Ravenous Romance, 12-30-10) is my first erotic romance novel.

DUSK is a sexy vampire tale, in which an ancient voodoo priestess and her vampire lover must overcome their “bad blood” to save the lives of ordinary humans.

When Judi kindly asked me to guest blog on her site today, I decided to talk about the allure of vampires.

These are seductive creatures who take what they want. The vampire is the ultimate bad boy (or bad girl!): drinks your blood, lives forever, and often tormented by his own desires.

Of course, this is the cliché version of the vampire, who comes in plenty of other flavors: some don’t drink human blood, some aren’t plagued by any guilt, and some pine for a way out of immortality.

But in the end, no matter what the flavor, the vampire represents forbidden love and lust. There’s no way to resist these guys, and that makes them sexy and intoxicating.

I wrote my first vampire story when I was thirteen years old. It had a simple title: The Master. It was set in a graveyard, and there was absolutely nothing sexy about the vampire. The story was pure horror. I liked creepy stories that made my heart race.

I continued writing creepy stories, even while sitting in classes. And when I wasn’t physically in school, I wrote creepy stories about my classes.

It was a hop and a skip from there to erotic horror and dark comedy. I wrote a lot of stories about vampires, witches, ghouls, spirits, and other supernatural entities.

I obviously loved the paranormal…

And now I love writing paranormal romances. The fact that a romance has a happy ending appeals to me a lot.

I also like to keep things moving with tight plots, and good characterization is always a wise thing to toss into fiction. I don’t know if I achieve these goals, but I always try.

But back to DUSK! Ravenous Romance calls DUSK an “adult Twilight,” and while DUSK is about forbidden love and lust, it also has plenty of passion. Yes, the characters do have sex: imagine that!

With DUSK, I decided to add some love triangles, and along with my lead vamp hero, I made my heroine an ancient voodoo priestess and gave her a longtime lover, who just happens to be a poetic wraith. I even tossed in a gargoyle, who falls in love with the true Venus de Milos: hey, they’re both statues, so why shouldn’t they fall in love? Finally, I gave DUSK an underpinning of mystery to drive the plot.

My goal is to entertain readers. So if you read DUSK, I hope you like it.

Lana Griffin

Alexandra Leveau comes from an ancient voodoo priestess clan that’s been feuding with sexy vamp Vadim Blerinca’s family for centuries. The mysterious “bad blood” between the Leveaus and Blerincas is what keeps Alexandra and Vadim burning for each other, yet it also makes them a very dangerous match: by making love, each could kill the other.

Added to the erotically charged mix is Alexandra’s ex-boyfriend, the poetic wraith Skipp, as well as a gargoyle who is devoted to Alexandra and will kill anyone who tampers with her. Add one more wraith to the mix plus an insane vamp sire and the true Venus de Milos. Now mix in elements of murder and mystery: the deaths of elderly citizens for unknown reasons.

A sexy, romantic romp of forbidden love and lust!

“A sexy vampire tale by Lana Griffin, the alter ego of a New York Times best-selling author!

DUSK gives you all this and more. A sexy, romantic romp of forbidden love and lust!”

    My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this book. Vampires, a Voodoo Priestess, reincarnation, wraiths, gargoyles and themes of love, loyalty and strength all combined to make for an interesting read. Of course there was some hot sex too and the danger of “bad blood” making it dangerous for Alexie & Vadim to be together. I also liked the inner battle that Alexie had to wage as well as having to deal with outside circumstances.

Now anyone who knows me, or at least has been reading my reviews for awhile, knows that I lean more towards longer novels or series, as I personally prefer more fully fleshed out stories and characters. But for a shorter novel, Dusk was a good read! If you love a quick bite of erotic paranormal romance with some interesting twists and turns, then Dusk is for you.

    Five For Five

I’ve decided to start my own meme where I spotlight 5 books I’ve read recently that all get 5 Fangs or 5 Stars for being made of awesome! I won’t be writing up reviews on the books because if it recieves 5 Fangs from me, well then, it just doesn’t get any better in my books. It goes without saying that the books I’ll be featuring in this meme are all highly recommended reads by moi.

If anyone wants to do this meme on their blog, please feel free to do so and link back to me.

Honestly, I just don’t have time to review every book I read, well, the ones that aren’t sent to me for review, and I always beat myself up over not featuring really excellent reads on here, so I give you my Five For Five meme to fill that gap. 🙂 (This blog is a one woman blog-show afterall) So without further delay, I give you my first set of Five For Five!

Her latest mission is uncomfortably complex, and threatens the fragile peace between the vampire and mage races. As Sabina scrambles to figure out which side she’s on, she uncovers a tangled political web, some nasty facts about her family and some unexpected new talents. She really reaches the end of her leash, though, when her grandmother gets kicked out of the nursing home and Seph finds herself in the doghouse about some things she’s written. Then her werewolf friend Lorrie is murdered…and the high priestess of an important coven offers Seph big money to destroy the killer, a powerful vampire named Goliath Kline.

Seph is a tough girl, but this time she bites off more than she can chew. She needs a little help from her friends — werewolf friends. One of those friends, Johnny, the motorcycle-riding lead singer for the techno-metal-Goth band Lycanthropia, has a crush on her. Not only does Seph know rather more about Vivian’s disappearance than the other witches realize, but the epic struggle she’s just survived has left her with some highly unusual powers — ones that could be dangerous to reveal. Despite her reluctance, she agrees to participate, if only to prevent snooty Hunter Hopewell, an obnoxious but talented witch, from ending up in the winner’s circle. Can Seph hide her secrets — including her connection to the master vampire-wizard Menessos — from the terrifyingly wise judges? Plus, there’s her rock ‘n’ roll werewolf boyfriend, Johnny, and some angry fairies to deal with….

Once the competition begins, a finalist turns up dead. It looks as if one of the contestants is willing to do anything — including murder — to win. The Reckoners – Spotlight & Review

    The Reckoners by Doranna Durgin

  • Mass Market Paperback: 400 pages
  • Publisher: Tor Books; 1st edition (Feb 2 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0765361647
  • ISBN-13: 978-0765361646
  • Book Description:

“Ghost hunter Lisa McGarrity can’t understand what’s gotten into the undead recently. Ectoplasm-flinging spirits and ghouls with grudges seem to be coming out of the woodwork, and she’s been run ragged trying to calm the unusually outraged spirits. Tired of dealing with the disgruntled dead, Lisa is determined to take a break from all things metaphysical.

So when the mysterious and sexy Trevarr appears on her doorstep requesting her assistance in an urgent matter, Lisa is less than thrilled. Who is this man, and why is he so interested in her “kooky” hobby? What does he have to gain by visiting paranormal hot spots with her? Whatever he wants, Lisa can’t help being drawn to Trevarr, and as they start working together they stumble upon a house filled to the brim with ghosts driven to the edge of madness. Now Lisa and Trevarr must figure out what’s behind this ghost population explosion, before their mutual attraction causes explosions of its own.”

    My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a great mix of Urban Fantasy and a bit of Sci-Fi and Paranormal Romance. Garrie and her Reckoner crew were a blast to read about. Trevarr and Sklayne were definitely original, fun and interesting! And it didn’t hurt that Trevarr is all alpha and sinfully sexy! Garrie’s a fire cracker and I liked her dedication and courage.

The plot and pacing, the characters, the scenes and the conflict and resolution were all really well written. The only thing that I felt could’ve used a bit more development is the dialogue. I found it to be a bit stinted at times, but I enjoyed the story. I’m hoping there’s going to be more books in this series with these characters! (I just saw on Amazon that Reckoners Book 2 is due out in December 2010 – sweet!)

Doranna Durgin is the author of several Paranormal Romances, TV/Movie tie in’s and Romance novels. I believe that The Reckoners is her first Urban Fantasy, (I could be wrong), but I loved it. Find out more about Doranna and her books at her website.

    Spider’s Bite – Spotlight & Review

    Spider’s Bite by Jennifer Estep

  • Mass Market Paperback: 432 pages
  • Publisher: Pocket; Original edition (Jan 26 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1439147973
  • ISBN-13: 978-1439147979
  • Book Description:

“My name is Gin, and I kill people.

They call me the Spider. I’m the most feared assassin in the South — when I’m not busy at the Pork Pit cooking up the best barbecue in Ashland. As a Stone elemental, I can hear everything from the whispers of the gravel beneath my feet to the vibrations of the soaring Appalachian Mountains above me. My Ice magic also comes in handy for making the occasional knife. But I don’t use my powers on the job unless I absolutely have to. Call it professional pride.

Now that a ruthless Air elemental has double-crossed me and killed my handler, I’m out for revenge. And I’ll exterminate anyone who gets in my way — good or bad. I may look hot, but I’m still one of the bad guys. Which is why I’m in trouble, since irresistibly rugged Detective Donovan Caine has agreed to help me. The last thing this cold-hearted killer needs when I’m battling a magic more powerful than my own is a sexy distraction…especially when Donovan wants me dead just as much as the enemy.”

    My Thoughts:

Woo Hoo!! When is the next book in this series coming out? I want it now! And if you couldn’t tell by that, I absolutely loved this book. 😀 Gin is ” one of the bad guys” that you love in spite of the fact that she kills people for a living. A wonderfully written character mixed with an excellent story that leaves you satisfied yet clamouring for more.

Jennifer Estep has come up with a fresh new take in urban fantasy and is definitely an author I will be following. I really enjoyed the locale that was painted as it oozed atmosphere, almost a character in it’s own right. It felt like I was there. The characters were deep and well written, the plot and pacing – fast, fun and furious. I am happy to hear that the next book, Web Of Lies will be out in June 2010, and the next book: Venom in October 2010!

Nine Lives – Spotlight & Review

    Nine Lives by F. Say

  • Paperback: 292 pages
  • Publisher: Eloquent Books ( July 2008 )
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1934925403
  • ISBN-13: 978-1934925409
  • Book Description:

The lack of faith Sam carried with him for years had never given him reason to pause, not even for a moment, until tragedy on a rain-slick road rearranged his life, and his son’s, permanently. As Sam drudges through life as a widower and single parent, concepts form that lead him to believe the tragedy of a few months prior may not have been an accident, but instead a design of fate he had somehow evaded.

As everyday life revolves around him, Sam begins to experience ominous events pointing to the reality of what might have been… his own death. Eventually, Sam’s lack of faith is exchanged for fear as he concludes that it is not his life that is in jeopardy but quite possibly his soul. With guidance from a close friend of the family, Sam journeys south to a city known for its passion of the supernatural and occult. There he finds a more menacing presence that throws his being into chaos and threatens the very lives of the people around him.”

    My Thoughts:

This was an interesting read. Somewhat reminiscent of The Sixth Sense, it revolves around a father and his son both experiencing a sixth sense. It touches on the supernatural, on faith or lack of faith in religion, loss, and re-learning how to live after a huge loss and finding out that you’ve been changed on an elemental inner level.

I liked the story, the characters and the conflicts and resolution. Personally, I felt that the transitions from scene to scene could have used a bit of work and there were some small mistakes that could have been fixed with editing, but overall it didn’t affect the story much. (I’m just a nit-picker about that stuff). I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories that are similar to The Sixth Sense or is a fan of ghosts and the supernatural. It was a good read!
