Five For Five

I’ve decided to start my own meme where I spotlight 5 books I’ve read recently that all get 5 Fangs or 5 Stars for being made of awesome! I won’t be writing up reviews on the books because if it recieves 5 Fangs from me, well then, it just doesn’t get any better in my books. It goes without saying that the books I’ll be featuring in this meme are all highly recommended reads by moi.

If anyone wants to do this meme on their blog, please feel free to do so and link back to me.

Honestly, I just don’t have time to review every book I read, well, the ones that aren’t sent to me for review, and I always beat myself up over not featuring really excellent reads on here, so I give you my Five For Five meme to fill that gap. 🙂 (This blog is a one woman blog-show afterall) So without further delay, I give you my first set of Five For Five!

Red-Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells

  • Mass Market Paperback: 352 pages
  • Publisher: Orbit (April 1 2009)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0316037761
  • ISBN-13: 978-0316037761
  • Book Description:

“In a world where being of mixed-blood is a major liability, Sabina doesn’t really fit in. And being an assassin – the only profession fit for an outcast – doesn’t help matters. But she’s never brought her work home. Until now.

Her latest mission is uncomfortably complex, and threatens the fragile peace between the vampire and mage races. As Sabina scrambles to figure out which side she’s on, she uncovers a tangled political web, some nasty facts about her family and some unexpected new talents. Any of these things could be worryingly life-changing, but together, they could be fatal …

    This time, it’s personal.”

This debut Urban Fantasy novel was sent to me by the author and it blew me away! My apologies to Jaye for not getting a review posted. I highly, highly recommend it to anyone who loves an awesome UF read. I am also happy to see that the next book in the series, The Mage In Black, will be on the shelves on April 1st, 2010. And Jaye is hard at work on the third novel in the Sabina Kane series, Green-Eyed Demon.

    “A girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do….

Being a witch doesn’t pay the bills, but Persephone Alcmedi gets by between reading Tarot cards, writing her syndicated newspaper column, and kenneling werewolves in the basement when the moon is full — even if witches aren’t supposed to mingle with wolves. She really reaches the end of her leash, though, when her grandmother gets kicked out of the nursing home and Seph finds herself in the doghouse about some things she’s written. Then her werewolf friend Lorrie is murdered…and the high priestess of an important coven offers Seph big money to destroy the killer, a powerful vampire named Goliath Kline.

Seph is a tough girl, but this time she bites off more than she can chew. She needs a little help from her friends — werewolf friends. One of those friends, Johnny, the motorcycle-riding lead singer for the techno-metal-Goth band Lycanthropia, has a crush on her. And while Seph has always been on edge around this 6’2″ leather-clad hunk, she’s starting to realize that although their attraction may be dangerous, nothing could be as lethal as the showdown that awaits them.”

Persephone Alcmedi has been persuaded to compete for the position of High Priestess of the Cleveland, Ohio, coven — now that the former priestess, Vivian Diamond, has strangely gone missing. Unfortunately, there are a few small problems with the idea. Not only does Seph know rather more about Vivian’s disappearance than the other witches realize, but the epic struggle she’s just survived has left her with some highly unusual powers — ones that could be dangerous to reveal. Despite her reluctance, she agrees to participate, if only to prevent snooty Hunter Hopewell, an obnoxious but talented witch, from ending up in the winner’s circle. Can Seph hide her secrets — including her connection to the master vampire-wizard Menessos — from the terrifyingly wise judges? Plus, there’s her rock ‘n’ roll werewolf boyfriend, Johnny, and some angry fairies to deal with….

Once the competition begins, a finalist turns up dead. It looks as if one of the contestants is willing to do anything — including murder — to win. Suddenly Seph has even more on her plate than she thought: from solving a murder to working out what her new powers really are…and exactly why they’re creating so much havoc in her love life.”

The Reckoners – Spotlight & Review

    The Reckoners by Doranna Durgin

  • Mass Market Paperback: 400 pages
  • Publisher: Tor Books; 1st edition (Feb 2 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0765361647
  • ISBN-13: 978-0765361646
  • Book Description:

“Ghost hunter Lisa McGarrity can’t understand what’s gotten into the undead recently. Ectoplasm-flinging spirits and ghouls with grudges seem to be coming out of the woodwork, and she’s been run ragged trying to calm the unusually outraged spirits. Tired of dealing with the disgruntled dead, Lisa is determined to take a break from all things metaphysical.

So when the mysterious and sexy Trevarr appears on her doorstep requesting her assistance in an urgent matter, Lisa is less than thrilled. Who is this man, and why is he so interested in her “kooky” hobby? What does he have to gain by visiting paranormal hot spots with her? Whatever he wants, Lisa can’t help being drawn to Trevarr, and as they start working together they stumble upon a house filled to the brim with ghosts driven to the edge of madness. Now Lisa and Trevarr must figure out what’s behind this ghost population explosion, before their mutual attraction causes explosions of its own.”

    My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a great mix of Urban Fantasy and a bit of Sci-Fi and Paranormal Romance. Garrie and her Reckoner crew were a blast to read about. Trevarr and Sklayne were definitely original, fun and interesting! And it didn’t hurt that Trevarr is all alpha and sinfully sexy! Garrie’s a fire cracker and I liked her dedication and courage.

The plot and pacing, the characters, the scenes and the conflict and resolution were all really well written. The only thing that I felt could’ve used a bit more development is the dialogue. I found it to be a bit stinted at times, but I enjoyed the story. I’m hoping there’s going to be more books in this series with these characters! (I just saw on Amazon that Reckoners Book 2 is due out in December 2010 – sweet!)

Doranna Durgin is the author of several Paranormal Romances, TV/Movie tie in’s and Romance novels. I believe that The Reckoners is her first Urban Fantasy, (I could be wrong), but I loved it. Find out more about Doranna and her books at her website.
