Bernita Harris – Guest Blog & Giveaway

Hi All,

Today I have Paranormal Romance author Bernita Harris here guest blogging to celebrate the upcoming release of her debut e-book, Dark & Disorderly! Be sure to read through to the end for the giveaway deets. I’ll pass the reigns over…

Sidhes and Such
When one has written a paranormal suspense novel which includes a bean sidhe in the cast of characters, what better place to introduce her than a site by the name of Sidhe Vicious Reviews?
I’m really happy to be here today and thank you so much for inviting me!
Popular culture has trained us to think of the bean sidhe (banshee) in her aspect of The Weeper, the fae creature who attaches herself to various ancient families of Irish descent and keens a shrieking lament at their deaths.
However, I learned from research that Bean Sidhes–like most paranormal entitieshave multiple roles in myth and legend. She is also the Washer Woman, the Woman-of-the Fords, who launders the clothing of those who are about to die. It seemed appropriate then in Dark and Disorderly, that–instead of beating at blood-stained clothing in the cold water at the edge of some shallow river ford–my modern banshee frequent the local laundromat.
At their first encounter there, Lillie describes her thus:
A small woman in a forest green tracksuit and a stone-gray windbreaker sleeve-tied around her shoulders like a cloak stood filling the washer next to mine. Ornate, carved combs swept back her hair, brick-red, from a delicate, ageless face. Her ears, contrary to popular description, were not pointed. She had no aura as such, she was pure shimmer.
She smiled and looked me up and down, green eyes crinkling, and turned back to her mixed wash. Sheets and men’s clothes, mostly, brightly stained, in a wicker basket by her feet. Cold water wash for blood…
I took my hand away from the useless bag of salt hidden in the kangeroo pocket of my sweatshirt. Rowan and red alder alone would serve for such as she.
The banshee proceeds to make enigmatic comments about Lillie’s parentage, warns her of the corpse pale on her doorstep– and advises her not to subject her good bras to the excessive heat of the commercial dryer.
Of course, the banshee is not the only paranormal creature to appear in Dark and Disorderly. Also out of legend comes a Mauthe Doog, a Black Dog named Dumbarton, who, when he is not off chasing spectral squirrels and ghostly groundhogs, presents himself as Lillie’s watchdog.
And, of course, there are the ghosts…
Writing is an isolating occupation, so writers crave and yearn for readers’ reactions, comments and questions. Please comment! Please ask! And you can always reach me at bernita dot harris at gmail dot com.I would love to hear from you!

Dark And Disorderly – Spotlight & Review

Dark & Disorderly by Bernita Harris

On sale date: Jun 28, 2010

Publisher: Carina Press

eISBN: 9781426890338

Genre: Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

Book Description:

“I was standing there naked when my dead husband walked into my bathroom…”

Lillie St. Claire is a Talent, one of the rare few who can permanently dispatch the spirits of the dead that walk the earth. Her skills are in demand in a haunted country, where a plague of ghosts is becoming a civic nuisance.

Those skills bring her into conflict with frightened citizens who view Talents as near-demons. Her husband comes to see her as a Freak; so when Nathan dies after a car crash, she is relieved to be free of his increasingly vicious presence. Lillie expects to be haunted by Nathan’s ghost, but not to become Suspect #1 for her husband’s murder and reanimation.

But what’s most surprising of all is the growing attraction between her and psi-crime detective John Thresher. He thinks that Lillie killed Nathan—and Nathan must agree, because his zombie is seeking revenge. Now she and Thresher must work together to solve her husband’s murder—before his corpse kills her…”

My Thoughts:

I quite enjoyed this e-book which is part of Harlequin’s Carina Press launch month of releases. Bernita Harris writes a brilliant story with interesting and quirky characters who drive the tale. A wonderfully written dark and edgy paranormal world in which ghosts, talents, sidhe and humans co-exist.

Lillie St. Claire and John Thresher had sparks galore and I hope there will be another book about them! 😀 The villains were truly detestable, (which I love, because you have to hate the villain), and the supporting characters were great as well. There’s something unique about the author’s writing style or voice that I found to be refreshing. It almost has a touch of a British taste to the writing and I liked it! I also have to show some cover love as the gal on the cover looks exactly how I pictured Lillie in my mind. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more books by this author.
