  • Publisher: St. Martin’s Paperbacks; Original edition (Sep 28 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0312624700
  • ISBN-13: 978-0312624705
  • Genre: Urban Fantasy, Fae
  • Book Description:

“Mina is a banshee whose greatest power lies in her siren song. She’s beholden to her boss Joey, a snake-shifter who once saved her life and now employs her as a gang enforcer. She refuses to upset the fragile balance between them by admitting that she longs for him, that his embrace is the only thing she craves more than revenge for her mother’s death…

When Mina learns that Joey may have been involved in her mother’s murder, fury threatens to spill out of her note by vicious note. She and Joey have always trusted each other to stay alive, but now she’s not sure what to believe. The evidence stacked against him—or the one man who haunts her dreams and burns her blood…”

    My Thoughts:

Erica writes dark, gritty and provocative Urban Fantasy that captures the imagination and takes you on a journey through the dark side of the fae. I love it! Mina’s a rich and engaging character and I loved the chemistry and conflict between her and Joey. I never thought I’d see the day that I found a snake – shifter sexy, but lo and behold, Joey comes along and he is definitely dark, dangerous and SEXY. My heart broke along with Mina’s as she relived some really bad times in her past while trying to find out who killed her mother.

I love the gritty feel of what could be the underside of Melbourne, Australia. Populated with amazingly unique and dangerous fae characters that would have me looking over my shoulder! Loyalty, passion, betrayal, danger, suspense, and an amazing cast of paranormal beings who thrive on action, emotions and truly intriguing motives.  An excellent story written by a talented writer who paints pictures with her words. Though Poison Kissed is part of a series, all the books can easily be read as stand alones. I highly recommend this book/series to fans of richly detailed, dark, sexy Urban Fantasy.

Erica Hayes – Guest Blog & Giveaway

It’s my pleasure to have Erica Hayes back here at SVR to celebrate the release of the third book in her Shadowfae Chronicles, Poison Kissed. Here’s the link to her last guest blog where she discusses why we should read her books. Today, she’s discussing Banshee’s, or more to the point, her take on them. Very cool! Let’s give her a warm welcome and be sure to read after the guest blog for the giveaway info. 🙂

    Banshee blues

In fantasy, we’re often hard pressed to find new twists on old material, to make our paranormal creatures fresh and interesting for our readers – and for us, too! Where’s the fun in writing about the same old thing?

So when I decided to write about a banshee heroine – and she’s a kick-ass heroine, of course! – I wanted her to be a bit different. Dark and twisted. Dangerous. Not your ordinary banshee.

In old Irish culture, women called keeners sang a lament when someone died. For the great Irish families, the keener was a fairy, called a bean sidhe – and with her magic fairy prescience, she sang the lament even when the dead person was far away. So the banshee’s song often preceded the news of a family member’s death by days or even weeks.

Cool, I thought: a lady who sings about death. That’s dark and eerie already. But what if she didn’t just sing to signal a man’s death – what if it was her keening that killed him? What if her song itself was lethal? And I’m not talking about a funeral dirge, either. I’m thinking opera. Nerve-shattering soprano. A pure, beautiful, terrible voice from hell.

Now we’re getting somewhere. Better still, what if she could sing not only death, but pain, or fear, or other emotions too? A lady like that would be a formidable weapon.

And so Mina the gangster’s bodyguard was born. She’s tough and beautiful. Her voice can peel paint from walls. Her hearing is preternaturally sharp. She can sing you to sleep or into fits of mouth-frothing terror, and her kiss is laced with poison. And if she’s really angry, she’ll kill you with a scream.

Of course, as befitting any decent UF heroine, Mina has issues. She’s got a desperate crush on her gangster boss, a sexy snake-shifter who struggles to keep her at a distance, even though to show weakness in their world is death. She’s hunting a killer – her mother’s murderer – whose identity she can’t discover. And she has a weird love-hate relationship with her banshee powers:

“My magical melody swelled and twisted in my chest like a snake, longing to sing free. She’s a cruel deathwish mistress, my song, and she’d warp the world to her capricious will if I let her. She makes me strong, but her hunger shivers ice in my blood. I don’t want to be a killer.

Sometimes fate doesn’t give a damn what you want.”

Hell, yeah. This banshee is a lethal weapon! So what does an evil author do to a kick-ass character bent on carving up the scenery? I take her weapons away 🙂 Mina falls foul of a fairy trick, and loses her magical voice, right when she’s about to uncover the shattering secret of her mother’s murder.

Not the traditional banshee of old Irish legend, it’s true. But in these days of sparkling vampires, anything goes! So I hope you enjoy her story.

POISON KISSED ~ Book 3 of the Shadowfae Chronicles

Beyond the veil of magic, a fairy otherworld pulses with glamour and dark beauty. It’s a place where passions run deep and dark and death is just one kiss away…

Mina is a banshee whose greatest power lies in her siren song. She’s beholden to her boss Joey, a snake-shifter who once saved her life and now employs her as a gang enforcer. She refuses to upset the fragile balance between them by admitting that she longs for him, that his embrace is the only thing she craves more than revenge for her mother’s death…

When Mina learns that Joey may have been involved in her mother’s murder, fury threatens to spill out of her, note by vicious note. She and Joey have always trusted each other to stay alive, but now she’s not sure what to believe. The evidence stacked against him — or the one man who haunts her dreams and burns in her blood…

Jennifer Rardin – Tribute & Giveaway

Last week I heard the news that one of my all time favorite authors, Jennifer Rardin, had passed away unexpectedly on Monday September 20th, 2010. I was in shock and deeply saddened along with the rest of the Urban Fantasy community. Such a vibrant, kind, friendly, talented and funny lady, Jennifer will be greatly missed by many. My heart goes out to her family, close friends, colleagues and fans. The world is a little less brighter without her in it.

Has from The Book Pushers organised the collaboration  for a bunch of us bloggers to come together in some way to honor the memory of Jennifer and her amazing books, because we had all wanted to do something. I’ve been a fan since her first Jaz Parks book, Once Bitten, Twice Shy, hit the shelves in 2007. I can think of no better way to honor this lovely lady than to introduce new readers or re-introduce readers who haven’t read all the books, to her no holds barred, hilarious, action packed Urban Fantasy heroine Jaz Parks!

I will be giving away any one of these books to a random commenter, but book 7, Bitten In Two would be a pre-order. Giveaway is open internationally to anywhere the Book Depository ships. Please check at the Book Depository to see if they ship to your country. Contest will run through Tuesday, October 5th, 11:59pm.

To enter, please leave a meaningful comment about what you love about the Jaz Parks series, OR, if you haven’t read any of them, then what you love about Urban Fantasy. One comment = one entry. Let me know which book you’d like & please leave your email in the form of wilmaflinstone(at)thequarry(dot)com so you won’t be spammed. I will post and contact the winner on October 6th.

    Here are the Book Descriptions:

Once Bitten, Twice Shy – Jaz Parks #1

I’m Jaz Parks. My boss is Vayl, born in Romania in 1744. Died there too, at the hand of his vampire wife, Liliana. But that’s ancient history. For the moment Vayl works for the C.I.A. doing what he does best–assassination. And I help. You could say I’m an Assistant Assassin. But then I’d have to kick your ass.

Our current assignment seemed easy. Get close to a Miami plastic surgeon named Assan, a charmer with ties to terrorism that run deeper than a buried body. Find out what he’s meeting with that can help him and his comrades bring America to her knees. And then close his beady little eyes forever. Why is it that nothing’s ever as easy as it seems?

Another One Bites the Dust – Jaz Parks #2

In their latest mission, Jaz and Vayl are sent to kill an ancient Chinese vamp who’s stolen a vital piece of biotechnology. The catch? They’re undercover as street performers…and Jaz has to belly dance.

Biting the Bullet – Jaz Parks #3

The Raptor, the CIA’s longtime nemesis, is back. Jaz Parks and her vampire boss Vayl are asked to join her brother David’s special ops team to take him down. But when her spirit guide tells her that she’s being lead to the wrong man, and she starts asking the wrong questions, her life — and her job– are threatened. And the one person who can help her–her boss– is off on a wild goose chase. Add to the mix a pack of reavers bent on revenge along with a small army of desert monsters, and BITING THE BULLET will take you so close to the edge of your seat you may want to leave a pillow on the floor just in case.

Bitten to Death – Jaz Park #4

Jaz Parks and her vampire boss, Vayl, have already fought demons, vampires, and reavers. Now, juggling work and family takes on a new dimension as she tackles her latest challenge: nail the Raptor before he can reduce her to Jaz-bits, survive a head-on crash with Vayl’s violent past, and lever her twin’s military career back on track before a dishonorable discharge ruins his life. To top it off, she must also contend with her father’s issues. Is he losing his mind? Or is someone really trying to kill him – from beyond the grave?

One More Bite – Jaz Parks #5

Jaz and Vayl have been assigned to travel to Inverness to prevent an assassination that has the potential to upset the balance between the west coast vampire nests and allow another Raptor to emerge. In the power vacuum left by Edward “the Raptor” Samos’ death, a struggle for supremacy has begun between his former allies: The Coven of Inverness, the Valencian Weres and The Flock. The struggle takes on a new twist when Pete learns that the Valencians have hired an assassin to take out the Coven’s leader, a powerful witch named Floraidh Halsey. Jaz and Vayl must stalk a killer as wily and Gifted as themselves as they travel through the wild, stark beauty of the Highlands. Their travels also bring new heights to their romance, a new depth to their passion, and a bond they are both, at last, willing to seal.

Bite Marks – Jaz Park #6
Jaz is possessed.  After biting the neck of a domyter during a forced visit to his territory, she now has unwelcome voices in her head.  While fighting for supremacy in her own mind, she finds herself confronted with a near-impossible task: perform perfectly on her next mission or face the unemployment line.

Bitten in Two – Jaz Parks #7

Jaz Parks here. I. Am. Pissed. Just as Vayl and I arrive in Morocco to secure an ancient artifact, he wakes up calling me by another woman’s name. And it’s not even a good one. But since any form of argument transforms him into an unholy terror, I’m forced to play along until the gang and I can figure out what kind of power has so vastly altered his perceptions.

So it’s time for me to do what any well-trained assassin in my position might do. I attack. What follows is a hair-raising, breath-taking bullet train ride to the finish as the crew battles on multiple fronts. I now know what I have to do – I must return to hell one last time.

    Nocturnal – Spotlight & Review

Nocturnal  by Jacquelyn Frank, Kate Douglas, Jess Haines & Clare Willis

  • Paperback: 532 pages
  • Publisher: Zebra – Kensington; 1 edition (Aug 24 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1420109871
  • ISBN-13: 978-1420109870
  • Genre: Paranormal Romance, Anthology
  • Book Description & My Thoughts:

The Phoenix Project” by Jacquelyn Frank. Held captive, Amara is subjected to bizarre experiments that test the limits of her sanity. But nothing prepares her for being locked away – naked – with a sexy ex-cop…after they’ve been pumped full of drugs that increase their sexual appetites to animalistic intensity…”

Whew, I had to check the spine to see if this book was Erotica or just regular Paranormal Romance after reading this first story. The chemistry between these two is HOT. Nick and Amara are great characters and I absolutely loved the story. Very original and I am hoping that Ms. Frank will write more about Morphates and this world she’s created. Dark, sexy and a roller-coaster ride of danger and suspense.

“Crystal Dreams” by Kate Douglas – When Lemurian Guard Darius chases a demon spirit to Earth, he faces a lethal battle between good and evil. His ally is Mari, a breathtakingly beautiful human who unknowingly holds the key to victory. But before the war is over, Darius’ desire for his mortal companion threatens to erupt – and could cost Mari her life…”

This tale is told in the same world that Kate Douglas introduced us to in her novel, Demon Fire, her Demon Slayers series. I am in lust with Darius and want a Lemurian of my own, thanks! 😉 Mari is a sweetheart and I really enjoyed the progression of her relationship with Darius. Really cool world building paired up with interesting characters and a great plot & pacing. I know that I will be following forthcoming books in this series.

“Spark of Temptation” by Jess Haines – Blackmailed into taking a treacherous case, P.I. Sara Halloway is thrust into a demon war. Sara seeks guidance from a charismatic mage, but their hunger for one another soon becomes a deadly distraction…and the danger surrounding them only makes their urges more powerful…”

This novella happens between book one, Hunted By The Others, and book two, Taken By The Others, in Jess Haines’ H & W Investigations series. Sara is the partner of Shiarra, who is the main character in both the books. It was awesome to read a story in Sara’s P.O.V. that was filled with characters from the books. Sara takes a job from Royce, a bad-a$$ vamp, and action, danger, conflict and some romance ensues! Sara & Arnold make a great team and I was really happy to read their story!

“My Soul to Take” by Clare Willis – New Orleans native Dr. Maggie Dillon thought she left her past behind her – until she’s enraptured by a handsome patient who has been possessed by a malevolent spirit. To find a cure, Colby revisits her magical roots – and unleashes a primal lust too vital to ignore…”

Maggie Dillon meets her soul mate in a patient who truly is possessed! Derek is handsome, talented & tortured by the malevolent spirit residing in him. Maggie has to call her sister Eve, who is a Voodoo Priestess in New Orleans to come and help with Derek. A fun read with engaging characters.

    J.K. Beck – Guest Blog & Giveaway

I am really excited to have author J.K. Beck here today guest blogging! The first book in her new Shadow Keepers Series, When Blood Calls is in stores now, with the next book, When Pleasure Rules, due to hit shelves on September 28th, 2010. You can read my review of When Blood Calls HERE. Let’s give J.K. a warm welcome because a) she’s awesome, b) I’m convinced she can leap tall buildings in a single bound because she had to practically bend over backwards to get me this post in time right smack dab in the middle of a chaotic move and c) shhh, don’t tell but she’s a best selling author also known as Julie Kenner! Oh yeah, and she’s also giving one lucky commenter a copy of When Pleasure Rules. 😀

J.K. – What would you do if you could slip into someone’s head and get their thoughts? Would you be tempted to use the information for blackmail? To win in the stock market? To make life better for yourself and those you care about?

And what if taking that information could cause harm to another?

It’s an interesting dilemma, and it’s what Lissa, the heroine in my second Shadow Keepers book, is faced with. In WHEN PLEASURE RULES, we meet Lissa, a succubus with a secret skill—when she takes a bit of soul, she also takes thoughts. It’s a skill she’s had throughout all her lives, though she has little memory of the past lives. In this life, she’s used the skill to gain entrance into men’s heads in order to use that information in her quest to rescue the girls she protects from harsh masters. But when the PEC learns of her unique—and illegal—talent, they decide to make the most of it, setting her up as a confidential informant to take information from a werewolf, Rand, who’s recently come to town…and may be behind a series of brutal murders.

The idea of a woman who could get into the heads of men was interesting enough—couple that with Lissa being forced to do it in order to save herself and the women she protects, and it made for a fabulously fun story to write, especially when Rand, dark and dangerous himself, was tossed into the equation.

As you can probably tell, the Shadow Keepers books are set in a paranormal world. Specifically, the books are centered around a paranormal judicial system charged with the investigation and prosecution of crimes committed by the shadow beings.

I’ve had a lot of fun with the books, and with the characters and creatures that inhabit them—vampires, werewolves, daemons, succubi and more!

You can find excerpts, enter contests, or just poke around at the series website, www.theshadowkeepers.com, read my blog at www.jkbeck.com, or see the series book trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KZ2Dv1TSi4 And be sure to friend me on Facebook (www.facebook.com/authorjkbeck) and follow me on Twitter (www.twitter.com/jkbeck)!

Leave a comment to be entered to win a copy of When Pleasure Rules! Talk about anything, or tell us what you’d do if you could poke around in someone’s head!

    Happy reading!

Thanks J.K.! I know that I’ll be rushing out to grab a copy of When Pleasure Rules as soon as it hits shelves. 🙂

When Blood Calls – Spotlight & Review

When Blood Calls by J.K. Beck

  • Mass Market Paperback: 416 pages
  • Publisher: Bantam; Original edition (Aug 31 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 044024577X
  • ISBN-13: 978-0440245773
  • Genre: Paranormal Romance
  • Book Description:

“Sara Constantine is one of the country’s most tenacious prosecuting attorneys—and she’s just secured a well-earned promotion. At first she’s thrilled. Then she finds out her new job involves prosecuting vampires and werewolves. And nothing prepares Sara for the shock she receives when she meets the first defendant she’ll be trying to put away: Lucius Dragos, the sexy stranger with whom she recently shared an explosive night of ecstasy.

When Lucius Dragos kisses the beautiful woman sitting next to him at the bar, he’s only hoping to blend into the crowd and avoid the perceptive gaze of the man he’s following…and planning to kill. But what starts as a simple kiss to secure his cover ignites into a fierce hunger that leads to an all-consuming passion. Charged with murder, Luke knows Sara will do whatever it takes to see him locked away—unless he can convince her that he’s not the monster she thinks he is. And that might mean making the greatest sacrifice a vampire can make.”

    My Thoughts:

First of all, I am in love with this cover! Yes, the man is smokin, but what also works for me is the combination of colors, the crescent moon in the background, the cool glow coming from the ring, the lettering and the wisps of smoke. All together they combine to make for a really stand-out cover that really draws the eye, which is exactly what a cover should do. Mission accomplished!

Second, I could not put this book down! After having read a whole bunch of paranormal romances and urban fantasy, it’s a rare find that basically keeps me flipping pages all night, long past reasonable expectations. When Blood Calls was one of them. (Plus, Lucius Dragos is my new fictional boyfriend now, but that’s neither here nor there). I really liked the compelling  characters that J.K. created and the world in which she places them. Full of plot twists and turns, romance, suspense, action and danger.

When Blood calls is the first book in J.K. Beck’s Shadow Keepers series and after reading it, I say Bring On The Shadow Keepers! I haven’t been this excited about a series since I first started Kenyon’s Dark Hunters, Phoenix’s Makers Song series or Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. It’s a wonderful blend of both paranormal romance and urban fantasy which is in itself, intriguing because of the many layers woven into it. This book will remain on my “Keeper” shelf and this series has now become an “auto-buy” one for me.

    Winner – Foresight

Oh what a week it has been! My Birthday was on Saturday, had to make two trips to the doctors and I got caught up in all the excitement that is/was Blog Fest and Blog Mania. Whew! And then there’s BBAW going on to keep me reading too. I got lost in the internetz while reading new blogs and entering a few contests. Ok, more than a few. I am officially a contest-whore this month, lol. There are sooo many awesome books that have been recently released and that are coming up. I just couldn’t help myself. I would need to win the lottery to get them all, so I decided to try my luck with winning some of them in contests. Yep. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Hello! My name is Judi and I AM a book-a-holic!

Thanks to Sherry for coming by and to everyone who entered! 🙂 But enough of my rambling, you all want to know who won the copy of Sherry Ficklin’s Foresight. Random.org gave me #51, so a big

     CONGRATULATIONS to jmspettoli!!!

Please email me at sidhevicious(at)shaw(dot)ca with your mailing info so we can get your book out to you. If I don’t hear back from the winner in 5 days, a new name will be drawn from the entries. If you didn’t win, there are more contests going on and coming up, so be sure to check back. Or you can click on the book cover to order a copy for yourself. 😀

    Waiting On Wednesday

I’m going to have a go at this weekly event which was started by Jill over at Breaking The Spine.

    My first week’s pre-publication “can’t-wait-to-read” selection is:

His Darkest Embrace by Juliana Stone

    Jaguar Warriors  —  Book 2
    HarperCollins
    October 26, 2010
    ISBN-13: 9780061808807
    ISBN-10: 0061808806

    Book Description:

“A solitary hunter with no regard for the human world, Jagger Castille is a shifter living on the edge. It will take the woman who calls him enemy to give him a reason to live.

Jagger is a creature of the night—Skye Knightly soars in the sun. Natural adversaries, they have been joined by destiny in a mission entrusted to Skye’s family centuries ago: Nothing less than the salvation of the Earth.

Wounded and bitter, Jagger sought escape in the solitude of the jungle, driven by a need to disappear forever… until a mysterious shifter who calls to his soul and feeds a yearning long forgotten, pulls him from his dark path. A courageous warrior, Skye’s passion is equal to Jagger’s own—but can she trust a man on the edge? A man whose secrets are as devastating as her own?

Each is the other’s sole hope for survival. But a dark and twisted truth is leading them toward the ultimate sacrifice for a love they may never live to claim.”

I read the first book in this series, His Darkest Hunger, back when it hit bookstores in June and I was hooked! Awesome Paranormal Romance? Check. Super sexy alpha male jaguar-shifter and female protag that you’re rooting for the whole time? Check. Am I ready to read about more great romance between engaging characters in this world that Juliana Stone has created? Why yes, yes I am! 😀
