Poison Kissed – Spotlight & Review

Poison Kissed by Erica Hayes

  • Mass Market Paperback: 352 pages
  • Publisher: St. Martin’s Paperbacks; Original edition (Sep 28 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0312624700
  • ISBN-13: 978-0312624705
  • Genre: Urban Fantasy, Fae
  • Book Description:

“Mina is a banshee whose greatest power lies in her siren song. She’s beholden to her boss Joey, a snake-shifter who once saved her life and now employs her as a gang enforcer. She refuses to upset the fragile balance between them by admitting that she longs for him, that his embrace is the only thing she craves more than revenge for her mother’s death…

When Mina learns that Joey may have been involved in her mother’s murder, fury threatens to spill out of her note by vicious note. She and Joey have always trusted each other to stay alive, but now she’s not sure what to believe. The evidence stacked against him—or the one man who haunts her dreams and burns her blood…”

    My Thoughts:

Erica writes dark, gritty and provocative Urban Fantasy that captures the imagination and takes you on a journey through the dark side of the fae. I love it! Mina’s a rich and engaging character and I loved the chemistry and conflict between her and Joey. I never thought I’d see the day that I found a snake – shifter sexy, but lo and behold, Joey comes along and he is definitely dark, dangerous and SEXY. My heart broke along with Mina’s as she relived some really bad times in her past while trying to find out who killed her mother.

I love the gritty feel of what could be the underside of Melbourne, Australia. Populated with amazingly unique and dangerous fae characters that would have me looking over my shoulder! Loyalty, passion, betrayal, danger, suspense, and an amazing cast of paranormal beings who thrive on action, emotions and truly intriguing motives.  An excellent story written by a talented writer who paints pictures with her words. Though Poison Kissed is part of a series, all the books can easily be read as stand alones. I highly recommend this book/series to fans of richly detailed, dark, sexy Urban Fantasy.

Erica Hayes – Guest Blog & Giveaway

It’s my pleasure to have Erica Hayes back here at SVR to celebrate the release of the third book in her Shadowfae Chronicles, Poison Kissed. Here’s the link to her last guest blog where she discusses why we should read her books. Today, she’s discussing Banshee’s, or more to the point, her take on them. Very cool! Let’s give her a warm welcome and be sure to read after the guest blog for the giveaway info. 🙂

    Banshee blues

In fantasy, we’re often hard pressed to find new twists on old material, to make our paranormal creatures fresh and interesting for our readers – and for us, too! Where’s the fun in writing about the same old thing?

So when I decided to write about a banshee heroine – and she’s a kick-ass heroine, of course! – I wanted her to be a bit different. Dark and twisted. Dangerous. Not your ordinary banshee.

In old Irish culture, women called keeners sang a lament when someone died. For the great Irish families, the keener was a fairy, called a bean sidhe – and with her magic fairy prescience, she sang the lament even when the dead person was far away. So the banshee’s song often preceded the news of a family member’s death by days or even weeks.

Cool, I thought: a lady who sings about death. That’s dark and eerie already. But what if she didn’t just sing to signal a man’s death – what if it was her keening that killed him? What if her song itself was lethal? And I’m not talking about a funeral dirge, either. I’m thinking opera. Nerve-shattering soprano. A pure, beautiful, terrible voice from hell.

Now we’re getting somewhere. Better still, what if she could sing not only death, but pain, or fear, or other emotions too? A lady like that would be a formidable weapon.

And so Mina the gangster’s bodyguard was born. She’s tough and beautiful. Her voice can peel paint from walls. Her hearing is preternaturally sharp. She can sing you to sleep or into fits of mouth-frothing terror, and her kiss is laced with poison. And if she’s really angry, she’ll kill you with a scream.

Of course, as befitting any decent UF heroine, Mina has issues. She’s got a desperate crush on her gangster boss, a sexy snake-shifter who struggles to keep her at a distance, even though to show weakness in their world is death. She’s hunting a killer – her mother’s murderer – whose identity she can’t discover. And she has a weird love-hate relationship with her banshee powers:

“My magical melody swelled and twisted in my chest like a snake, longing to sing free. She’s a cruel deathwish mistress, my song, and she’d warp the world to her capricious will if I let her. She makes me strong, but her hunger shivers ice in my blood. I don’t want to be a killer.

Sometimes fate doesn’t give a damn what you want.”

Hell, yeah. This banshee is a lethal weapon! So what does an evil author do to a kick-ass character bent on carving up the scenery? I take her weapons away 🙂 Mina falls foul of a fairy trick, and loses her magical voice, right when she’s about to uncover the shattering secret of her mother’s murder.

Not the traditional banshee of old Irish legend, it’s true. But in these days of sparkling vampires, anything goes! So I hope you enjoy her story.

POISON KISSED ~ Book 3 of the Shadowfae Chronicles

Beyond the veil of magic, a fairy otherworld pulses with glamour and dark beauty. It’s a place where passions run deep and dark and death is just one kiss away…

Mina is a banshee whose greatest power lies in her siren song. She’s beholden to her boss Joey, a snake-shifter who once saved her life and now employs her as a gang enforcer. She refuses to upset the fragile balance between them by admitting that she longs for him, that his embrace is the only thing she craves more than revenge for her mother’s death…

When Mina learns that Joey may have been involved in her mother’s murder, fury threatens to spill out of her, note by vicious note. She and Joey have always trusted each other to stay alive, but now she’s not sure what to believe. The evidence stacked against him — or the one man who haunts her dreams and burns in her blood…

Jennifer Rardin – Tribute & Giveaway

Last week I heard the news that one of my all time favorite authors, Jennifer Rardin, had passed away unexpectedly on Monday September 20th, 2010. I was in shock and deeply saddened along with the rest of the Urban Fantasy community. Such a vibrant, kind, friendly, talented and funny lady, Jennifer will be greatly missed by many. My heart goes out to her family, close friends, colleagues and fans. The world is a little less brighter without her in it.

Has from The Book Pushers organised the collaboration  for a bunch of us bloggers to come together in some way to honor the memory of Jennifer and her amazing books, because we had all wanted to do something. I’ve been a fan since her first Jaz Parks book, Once Bitten, Twice Shy, hit the shelves in 2007. I can think of no better way to honor this lovely lady than to introduce new readers or re-introduce readers who haven’t read all the books, to her no holds barred, hilarious, action packed Urban Fantasy heroine Jaz Parks!

I will be giving away any one of these books to a random commenter, but book 7, Bitten In Two would be a pre-order. Giveaway is open internationally to anywhere the Book Depository ships. Please check at the Book Depository to see if they ship to your country. Contest will run through Tuesday, October 5th, 11:59pm.

To enter, please leave a meaningful comment about what you love about the Jaz Parks series, OR, if you haven’t read any of them, then what you love about Urban Fantasy. One comment = one entry. Let me know which book you’d like & please leave your email in the form of wilmaflinstone(at)thequarry(dot)com so you won’t be spammed. I will post and contact the winner on October 6th.

    Here are the Book Descriptions:

Once Bitten, Twice Shy – Jaz Parks #1

I’m Jaz Parks. My boss is Vayl, born in Romania in 1744. Died there too, at the hand of his vampire wife, Liliana. But that’s ancient history. For the moment Vayl works for the C.I.A. doing what he does best–assassination. And I help. You could say I’m an Assistant Assassin. But then I’d have to kick your ass.

Our current assignment seemed easy. Get close to a Miami plastic surgeon named Assan, a charmer with ties to terrorism that run deeper than a buried body. Find out what he’s meeting with that can help him and his comrades bring America to her knees. And then close his beady little eyes forever. Why is it that nothing’s ever as easy as it seems?

Another One Bites the Dust – Jaz Parks #2

In their latest mission, Jaz and Vayl are sent to kill an ancient Chinese vamp who’s stolen a vital piece of biotechnology. The catch? They’re undercover as street performers…and Jaz has to belly dance.

Biting the Bullet – Jaz Parks #3

The Raptor, the CIA’s longtime nemesis, is back. Jaz Parks and her vampire boss Vayl are asked to join her brother David’s special ops team to take him down. But when her spirit guide tells her that she’s being lead to the wrong man, and she starts asking the wrong questions, her life — and her job– are threatened. And the one person who can help her–her boss– is off on a wild goose chase. Add to the mix a pack of reavers bent on revenge along with a small army of desert monsters, and BITING THE BULLET will take you so close to the edge of your seat you may want to leave a pillow on the floor just in case.

Bitten to Death – Jaz Park #4

Jaz Parks and her vampire boss, Vayl, have already fought demons, vampires, and reavers. Now, juggling work and family takes on a new dimension as she tackles her latest challenge: nail the Raptor before he can reduce her to Jaz-bits, survive a head-on crash with Vayl’s violent past, and lever her twin’s military career back on track before a dishonorable discharge ruins his life. To top it off, she must also contend with her father’s issues. Is he losing his mind? Or is someone really trying to kill him – from beyond the grave?

One More Bite – Jaz Parks #5

Jaz and Vayl have been assigned to travel to Inverness to prevent an assassination that has the potential to upset the balance between the west coast vampire nests and allow another Raptor to emerge. In the power vacuum left by Edward “the Raptor” Samos’ death, a struggle for supremacy has begun between his former allies: The Coven of Inverness, the Valencian Weres and The Flock. The struggle takes on a new twist when Pete learns that the Valencians have hired an assassin to take out the Coven’s leader, a powerful witch named Floraidh Halsey. Jaz and Vayl must stalk a killer as wily and Gifted as themselves as they travel through the wild, stark beauty of the Highlands. Their travels also bring new heights to their romance, a new depth to their passion, and a bond they are both, at last, willing to seal.

Bite Marks – Jaz Park #6
Jaz is possessed.  After biting the neck of a domyter during a forced visit to his territory, she now has unwelcome voices in her head.  While fighting for supremacy in her own mind, she finds herself confronted with a near-impossible task: perform perfectly on her next mission or face the unemployment line.

Bitten in Two – Jaz Parks #7

Jaz Parks here. I. Am. Pissed. Just as Vayl and I arrive in Morocco to secure an ancient artifact, he wakes up calling me by another woman’s name. And it’s not even a good one. But since any form of argument transforms him into an unholy terror, I’m forced to play along until the gang and I can figure out what kind of power has so vastly altered his perceptions.

So it’s time for me to do what any well-trained assassin in my position might do. I attack. What follows is a hair-raising, breath-taking bullet train ride to the finish as the crew battles on multiple fronts. I now know what I have to do – I must return to hell one last time.

Robert S. Sadler – Guest Blog & Giveaway

Today I have Urban Fantasy author, Robert S. Sadler, joining us at SVR to celebrate the release of his novel, Secrets Of Blood & Bone, the first in The Q Trilogy! He’s taking over, guest blogging with a giveaway, so be sure to read all the way through to the end and lets give him a warm welcome. 🙂

    Sadler.Robert.S

So let me start off by thanking Judi for being an absolutely awesome person and fabulous reviewer. I don’t just say this because she liked my book, breaking into the literary world is extremely difficult and Sidhe Vicious Reviews is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise very cynical industry. So again, thank you!

As silly as it may sound I wrote Secrets of Blood & Bone for people who don’t really like to read. I tried to keep it simple yet exciting, constantly moving but always going somewhere. I wanted to give it a sense of intrigue without being impossible to figure out, and most importantly I wanted to write within the genre without copying someone else’s world. An action packed thrill ride full of original characters with real problems and emotions. Mix all that up with a heaping spoon full of violence and a healthy serving of sex and you have the exact recipe for the kind of book I always wanted to read.

While I have incorporated many of the creatures we have all grown to love reading about over the years, I have put my own twist on many of their origins. Vampires and shape shifters of all kinds were originally created out of hatred and jealousy as part of a master race by the Dark God Brhamoren. Humans and Ogres were both created out of love and necessity by the most caring of all the old Gods, Odgerrin. The Fey and all of Faerie where a product of petty vanity by the beautiful Lamenell, and the mountain giants known as the Jätti were a Matriarchal tribe of warriors created by one so old none know their true origins.

Alongside our usual favorites, completely new characters also grace the pages of my trilogy. The brilliant Tonttu, who manage the finances of the Vanha Rotu, mostly resemble sarcastic Keebler elves with a Napoleon complex. Skritek are the very distant relatives to the Tonttu, but where the Tonttu got the brains, the Skritek got the brawn. Try to imagine furless, reptilian Ewoks in heavy armor with sharks teeth and bad dispositions. They act as the foot soldiers to the Valdosa Skira and supply endless comic relief when they aren’t causing mayhem and destruction. Finally we have the Mazāk Tiem; “The lesser ones” are made up of any supernatural creature that doesn’t possess the appropriate lineage to find itself counted amongst the ranks of the nobility or the warrior clans. While the Valdosa Skira gives these misfits of nature the chance to attain wealth, power, and position through combat, the Vanha Rotu has relegated them to a life of servitude and slavery. Most Mazak Tiem are the product of either cross species breeding or human rape by a supernatural. Until the two societies started recruiting unaffiliated Mazak Tiem, most had no clue of their heritage and often hid out in remote locations where they could avoid civilization. Ever wonder about the snake boy, or the dog faced kid at the circus? Are they Mazak Tiem perhaps?

This is just a taste of the world that I have created. A place where monsters can be heroes and saviors can be villains, where life and death, right and wrong are so intertwined that it’s hard to tell them apart. A place where love can blossom over night and vendettas can last for millennia. This is the world that I love to write about and I sincerely hope you grow to love it as well.

    —————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Thank you Rob! Definitely an interesting introduction to the captivating world you’ve created. I know that I’m looking forward to book 2, Revelations Out Of Darkness.

Secrets Of Blood & Bone – Spotlight & Review

Secrets Of Blood & Bone by Robert S. Sadler

  • Paperback: 280 pages
  • Publisher: Createspace (May 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1452850267
  • ISBN-13: 978-1452850269
  • Genre: Urban Fantasy
  • Book Description:

What if one night you discovered you were a rare breed of warrior meant to be the champion of all mankind? That you were caught in the middle of an age old war between supernatural forces and had no choice but to fight or die? And that the beautiful predator staring at you from across the room was just dying to have sex with you, or maybe eat you depending on her mood?

One night while working in a dangerous inner city emergency room, Q’s security guard duties take him into the parking lot where he attempts to diffuse a gang war in the making. Riding on the heels of the bullet-riddled gang-bangers come a squad of mercenary soldiers accompanied by a pair of supernatural monsters who leave nothing but death and destruction in their wake. As Q’s new life unfolds before him, he finds himself fighting for his life with a hell-hound, dining with an immortal shape shifter, bantering with a genius gnome, and having sex with a beautiful were-tiger all before the first night comes to a close. During his journey, Q must discover if his father is indeed a serial rapist and who was responsible for his real mother’s death while fighting for his life and his sanity in a world where sex and violence are everyday facets of normal existence.

The world of the Skira and the Rotu lends a new twist to the typical vampire vs. werewolf genre. Here vampires, shifters, trolls, and others work together or rip each other apart based on their belief systems not their species. Creatures that seldom see the limelight play major roles in this book, Ogres for instance are discovered to be noble warriors created for a purpose, not the blood thirsty baby eaters most believe. New creatures such as the small but vicious Skritek act as stead fast friends and comedy relief, while mysterious characters such as the powerful Lord Obsidian appear to be hero’s one moment and villains the next. Good and evil, friend or foe is not so clearly delineated in this world. Q, being a complex character, is full of very real human inadequacies but is forced to leave the tedium of his old life behind, in a world where he never quite belonged. Q fully embraces a new life full of sex, blood, violence and love on his way to an epic climax and a discovery that will shake not only his world but that of the entire supernatural community!”

    My Thoughts:

I had a hard time putting this one down once I started reading it! Think Bruce Willis action movie mixed with some majorly cool paranormal elements. I also think that both men and women will love this book. Thankfully, it’s the first book in the Trilogy Of Q, so there’s a lot more awesome kick-a$$ery to come!

Q’s a complex and really interesting character with a strong voice and he’s dark, dangerous & sexy too. 😀 Complex plotting and sub-plotting along with an original take on several supernatural beings along with a wickedly fun story had me relishing each and every page. The book description is really detailed, so other than suggesting that EVERYONE should give this book a read, I don’t know what else to say other than I loved it and can’t wait for the next one!

Robert’s hard at work on the next book, Revelations Out Of Darkness, due out later this year.

Supernatural: The Unholy Cause – Spotlight & Review

Supernatural: The Unholy Cause by Joe Schreiber

  • Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
  • Publisher: Titan Books; 1 edition (May 4 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1848565283
  • ISBN-13: 978-1848565289
  • Genre: TV Tie-In/Urban Fantasy
  • Book Description:

“A Supernatural novel that reveals a previously unseen adventure for the Winchester brothers, from the hit TV series!

Twenty-seven years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. In the years after, their father, John, taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America and he taught them how to kill it.

Way back in April 1862, Confederate Captain Jubal Beauchamp leads a charge across a Georgia battleground…  Fast forward to 2009 and a civil war re-enactment becomes all too real. When Sam and Dean head down south to investigate they find that history has got somewhat out of hand.”

    My Thoughts:

Sam and Dean have another somewhat hellacious adventure in this novel dealing with demons messing up a civil war re-enactment weekend in Georgia. They come up against some truly evil beings. Castiel is also featured, which is always a bonus. The ass-kickery ensues with hair-raising events and enough creepy suspense to keep you gripping the edge of your seat while flipping the pages.

Joe Schreiber does an excellent job of taking the reader into Sam & Dean’s world and swoops you up and along for the ride. He also does a wonderful job at penning Sam & Dean’s “voice and character” onto paper. I am so loving these Supernatural books and they are a great way to get your Supernatural fix in while waiting for the next season to begin on the tube. I highly recommend this book to fans of the show and fans of really great Urban Fantasy!

    My Thoughts:

Anyone who has been following my blog for a while knows that I am a long time fan of Yasmine Galenorn’s work, and this first novel in the Indigo Court series did not disappoint! I was immediately drawn into Cicely’s world and led on a marvelous ride through it. Galenorn’s characters are always written with depth and richness that makes you believe that they could exist somewhere. The world that she crafts is so filled with atmosphere, it becomes almost like a character of its own.

Filled with characters that you fall in love with,  some that you love to hate, and excellent plotting and pacing equals a page flipping / no sleep night.  This book represents, at least to me, everything that makes an urban fantasy work. It’s also a perfect example of how to start a new series, as you don’t get lost in explanations of world-building. You get pulled right in and carried along for the supernatural ride of a lifetime.

Cicely is a strong lead and Grieve is a mouth-watering alpha who is the perfect match for her. Witches, vampires, fae and vampiric fae make for interesting conflicts and interactions. I am so looking forward to the next book in the series! Night Veil is scheduled to be released June 2011.

Dark And Disorderly – Spotlight & Review

Dark & Disorderly by Bernita Harris

On sale date: Jun 28, 2010

    Publisher: Carina Press

    eISBN: 9781426890338

    Genre: Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

    Book Description:

“I was standing there naked when my dead husband walked into my bathroom…”

Lillie St. Claire is a Talent, one of the rare few who can permanently dispatch the spirits of the dead that walk the earth. Her skills are in demand in a haunted country, where a plague of ghosts is becoming a civic nuisance.

Those skills bring her into conflict with frightened citizens who view Talents as near-demons. Her husband comes to see her as a Freak; so when Nathan dies after a car crash, she is relieved to be free of his increasingly vicious presence. Lillie expects to be haunted by Nathan’s ghost, but not to become Suspect #1 for her husband’s murder and reanimation.

But what’s most surprising of all is the growing attraction between her and psi-crime detective John Thresher. He thinks that Lillie killed Nathan—and Nathan must agree, because his zombie is seeking revenge. Now she and Thresher must work together to solve her husband’s murder—before his corpse kills her…”

    My Thoughts:

I quite enjoyed this e-book which is part of Harlequin’s Carina Press launch month of releases. Bernita Harris writes a brilliant story with interesting and quirky characters who drive the tale. A wonderfully written dark and edgy paranormal world in which ghosts, talents, sidhe and humans co-exist.

Lillie St. Claire and John Thresher had sparks galore and I hope there will be another book about them! 😀 The villains were truly detestable, (which I love, because you have to hate the villain), and the supporting characters were great as well. There’s something unique about the author’s writing style or voice that I found to be refreshing. It almost has a touch of a British taste to the writing and I liked it! I also have to show some cover love as the gal on the cover looks exactly how I pictured Lillie in my mind. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more books by this author.
