Unchained – Spotlight & Review

Unchained by Sharon Ashwood

  • Paperback: 384 pages
  • Publisher: Signet (MM) (July 6 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0451230736
  • ISBN-13: 978-0451230737
  • Genre: Paranormal Romance
  • Book Description:

    “Been There. Slain That.

Ashe Carver is one kick-ass monster killer – and she has the scars to prove it. But faced with a custody battle for her ten-year-old daughter, Eden, she’s hung up her stakes and taken a job at the public library, determined to show the courts and her ten-year-old daughter that she’s as good a mother as she is a hunter.

Easier said than done. There are lovelorn vampires haunting the library, a slime demon in the shopping mall, and her new-mom sister needs a hand with her ghostbusting biz. Then, after centuries guarding a supernatural prison, Captain Reynard strides into her world like a hero from the library’s Must Reads. Smokingly gorgeous, passionate and courageous to a fault, he has only weeks to live unless Ashe finds the thief who took his soul.

Ashe picks up her weapons to save the day—but not every problem can be solved with a stake. With so much tragedy in her past, Ashe fears the disaster she sees ahead—and prays she doesn’t fail everyone. Again.

Memories are the hardest monsters to kill.”

    My Thoughts:

This is the third book in Sharon Ashwood’s The Dark Forgotten series. Ashe Carver is a wonderfully rich and complex character who steals the show, which is a good thing seeing as how the book is about her. The chemistry between her and Reynard is magnetic and I was flipping pages deep into the night to find out what would happen next!

I loved that Sharon Ashwood created a character who is a single mom, facing all the challenges that come with going through the adjustments of being a single parent and the heartbreak involved in going through a custody battle. Wonderfully written, this book has action, romance, suspense, danger, mystery, complex emotions, loyalty, bravery, and humor mixed in with some totally bad-a$$ paranormal badies and one really sexy, strong, courageous man.

I am so looking forward to more books in this series as Sharon has created a really detailed world in which I love to dwell for a few hours at a time. I highly recommend this book to fans of super sexy, dark in a good way, action packed paranormal romance!

Twice Dead – Spotlight & Review

    Twice Dead by Kalayna Price

  • Paperback: 266 pages
  • Publisher: Bell Bridge Books (February 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0984325670
  • ISBN-13: 978-0984325672
  • Genre: YA, Paranormal, Vampire, Shifters
  • Book Description:

“Newly undead shifter-turned-vampire Kita Nekai is coming to grips with the reality that her cat has not awakened since her change. What she needs is a little time to adjust to her new liquid diet and the increasingly complex attraction to her sire, Nathanial. What she gets is a headless harlequin. With the body count rising, Kita is dragged into a dangerous game of vampire politics.

Her involvement draws the attention of an ancient vampire known as the Collector who has a penchant for acquiring the unusual – like a pure blood shifter-turned vampire. Kita still has unfinished business of her own and finds herself deeper in magical debt. It’s a bad time to be a kitten who can’t slip her skin.

Kalayna Price’s debut novel, ONCE BITTEN, earned rave reviews and reached #1 on Amazon.com’s “Fantasy Bestseller List.” TWICE DEAD returns readers to a dark, seductive world where magic rules and ancient loyalties collide with modern challenges.”

    My Thoughts:

I jumped into this series with the second book, Twice Dead, and had no problems following along. I definitely want to read the first book, Once Bitten. Kalayna Price has created an interesting supernatural world filled with rich, intriguing characters. Kita is an interesting mix because she was a shifter that was turned into a vampire. Her progress while adjusting to the change in the face of danger kept me reading long into the night!

Filled with action, suspense, danger, and a fascinating relationship. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of urban fantasy, heroine’s who grow and come into their own, and characters that come alive on the pages of a fast paced story.

Bone Magic – Spotlight & Review

    Bone Magic by Yasmine Galenorn

  • Paperback: 320 pages
  • Publisher: Berkley (MM) (Jan 5 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0425231984
  • ISBN-13: 978-0425231982
  • Book Description

“We’re the D’Artigo sisters: savvy–and sexy–operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency.  But being half-human, half-Fae short-circuits our talents at all the wrong times.  My sister Delilah is a two-faced Were who turns into a golden tabby when she’s stressed.  And Menolly’s a vampire who’s still trying to get the hang of being undead.  As for me?  I’m Camille D’Artigo, a wicked-good witch who’s learning death magic with my youkai-kitsune husband.  Until now, the Moon Mother’s pretty much ignored me, but she’s about to take me on the Hunt of my life…

Another equinox is here, and life’s getting more dangerous for all of us.  The past is catching up to our friends, Iris and Chase.  Smoky–the dragon of my dreams–is forced to choose between his family and me.  To top it off, there’s a new demon general in town and we can’t locate her.  And when the Moon Mother and the Black Beast summon me to Otherworld. I think I’m just going to reunite with my long-lost soulmate.  But once there, I’m forced to undergo a drastic ritual that will forever change my life, and the lives of those around me.”

    My Thoughts:

Bone Magic was quite simply, A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I guess you all want to know why I think it’s so awesome huh? That’s going to be hard to do without giving away spoilers, which I do not do here on SVR. I’ve followed this series since book one, Witchling, and with each successive novel in the series, Yasmine manages to ramp up the stakes, the world-building, the tension, the relationships and the danger. I am totally wrapped up in these characters and their world!

Bone Magic is told from Camille’s perspective and some major, and I mean MAJOR stuff happens in this book. I could not put it down. I was seriously considering getting the toothpicks out to force my eyelids to stay open so I could keep reading when it got too late, lol. One snippet is that Camille is finally reunited with Trillion, woo hoo! Some more of Smokeys’ and Iris’ back story is told for those of you itching to know more about them, and Camille, as it says in the blurb, goes through a “drastic ritual” that forever changes her life. This book, this series and this writer get two enthusiastic thumbs up from me. I can not wait for the next book in the series, Harvest Hunting which will be out October 2010, though there will be an Otherworld novella in the up-coming Inked anthology, out on January 5th, 2010.

Friday Night Bites – Spotlight & Review

Friday NBFriday Night Bites by Chloe Neill

  • Paperback: 368 pages
  • Publisher: Signet (TRD) ( Oct 6 2009 )
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 045122793X
  • ISBN-13: 978-0451227935
  • Book Description

    “Vamps in Chicago!

You’d think headlines like that would have provoked the fine citizens of the Windy City to take up arms against us bloodsucking fiends. Instead, ten months later, we’re enjoying a celebrity status reserved for the Hollywood elite—fending off paparazzi only slightly less dangerous than cross and stake-wielding slayers. Don’t get me wrong, Joe Public isn’t exactly thrilled to be living side-by-side with the undead, but at least they haven’t stormed the castle yet.

But all that will change once they learn about the Raves—mass feeding parties where vampires round up humans like cattle and drink themselves silly. Most civilized vampires frown on this behaviour, putting mere mortals at ease with their policy of asking a person’s consent before taking a big gulp of the red stuff. However, that doesn’t make good copy for a first time reporter looking to impress his high society family.

So now my “master,” the centuries old, yet gorgeously well-preserved Ethan Sullivan, wants me to reconnect with my own upper class family and act as liaison between humans and vampires—and keep the more unsavoury aspects of our existence out of the media. But someone doesn’t want people and vamps to play nicey-nice—someone with an ancient grudge.”

    My Thoughts:

The second book in the Chicagoland Vampires series did not dissapoint! If you’ve read my review of the first book, Some Girls Bite, then you know I was addicted from the get go. In this book, Merit continues her training as Sentinel for her “House”, and is still working on adjusting to her new life as a vampire. I love that Merit has such a sassy and courageous personality. I had a hard time putting the book down. The plot flows well, mixed in with excitement, danger, mystery, romance and humor. The world-building, characters and story telling that Chloe Neill has crafted is quite simply gritty and delicious at the same time!

I highly recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and Mystery or Suspense of the supernatural variety. If you’re new to the genres, but not sure about the “gore” factor involved with Vampires and Shifters, then this is also a great series as it’s not overly descriptive in that regard. There is violence, as it wouldn’t be a Paranormal/Urban Fantasy without it, but it’s not of the horror variety. (Though, strangely enough, I see it shelved in the Horror section of my local bookstores!? This does not confound me overly much as I also find Erotica shelved in Fantasy too, lol.)
