Christine & Ethan Rose – Guest Blog & Contest

C & E Rose Today I have Christine & Ethan Rose, authors of the Rowan Of The Wood YA Fantasy series here guest blogging to celebrate the release of the second novel, Witch On The Water. There’s also a contest for some pretty awesome prizes (she says enviously ;)), so be sure to read through till the end and I’ll pass the keyboard over to Ethan…

The Lonely Hero (by Ethan Rose)

It is no accident that most of my central characters are solitary figures. The lonely soul adrift in a world that defies understanding is one of the most pervasive archetypal characters in human storytelling. It is a character easy to identify with since we all feel that way to some degree.

I believe that one of the strongest longings for humans is companionship, not to feel alone in a hostile and confusing world. This longing can be well employed to create an undercurrent to any adventure.

The classic hero’s quest is primarily a quest for the hero to find himself and how he or she fits into his or her world. It is a right of passage that begins alone and ends with a community.

The corollary characters to the lonely hero are the wise teacher and the lover. The wise teacher is typically grand-parental in aspect though not a real relative. They are often imbued with mystical type of knowledge. Merlin to Arthur and Obi Wan to Luke Skywalker are both good examples. They are there to help and guide the hero.

The lover is someone on the hero’s basic level, searching for their own answers and joining forces with the hero for mutual benefit. Taran and Princess Eilonwy from Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain Chronicles are great examples of this kind of partnership.

I admit that I am heavily influenced by my own life. I grew up without any real community or even a family. As a result I have always been a solitary person myself. But I have spent a good deal of my life searching for both a community and answers. This is why I can identify with my characters so well. There is a little bit of me in all of them.

————————————————————————————————————————–

Thanks Ethan! I can relate to the solitary figure myself, seeing as I’m somewhat of a hermit as well. I’m always fascinated by an authors insight into the inner workings of their character motivations and characteristics. Now on to the contest…

  2. My favorite hero? Hmm Well it depends on the type of book. If it is a YA mostly I like the reluctant hero. If it is an Adult contemp- the bad boy turned hero, if it is a para then Alpha all the way. So I suppose it really depends on the book!

I subscribed! Those are AWESOME prizes! I love the Green Man Journal! They look GREAT!

  10. I guess I like the reluctant hero—or really, any kind of unexpected hero. Let’s face it, the world is full of people who are idolized for their physical strength, their beauty, or their wealth. . . I want to read about somebody who’s average or just slightly on either side of it, but who has that one special quality that makes them heroic.
This sounds like a really great series! I’d like to read it myself and share it with younger readers!
    I’m also a subscriber!

  12. Hey Christine & Ethan Rose
I can’t wait to read Witch On The Water. I’m sure there will be a battle between my son and I to get see who gets to read it first.

As far as what type of hero’s I like I would have to say the reformed bad-boy type.

    Comment by Carmen R | October 15, 2009 | Reply

    • 😀 You’ll just have to get two! 😀

Ethan and I would get two books whenever a new Harry Potter would come out, so we didn’t have to wait for the other to finish.

  13. I do believe I am subscribed to everything you do (newsletter, this blog, your facebook…do you feel stalked yet?).

Leave a comment telling us what your favorite kind of hero is. Do you love the reluctant hero? The reformed bad-boy/girl hero? The totally alpha hero? The unintentional hero?

My favorite type of hero is the kind that does right not because it is popular or to become a hero or anything. He/she does it because it is THE RIGHT THING to do. Usually these types don’t always fall into the “hero” category, but they are just as vital as the do-gooder alpha heroes. I especially love the misunderstood, but don’t care what others think of him/her heroes who are more than able and willing to fight what they think is right. They are of more interest to me because there are more layers to their characters than the standard “hero trope”. This is why I preferred “bad guy/reformed” heroes or the anti-hero or moral gray characters as lead heroes.

  14. My favorite heroes are those that are physically flawed. I like when they have a physical issue they have to overcome. It makes them more real and you can’t help but want to take care of them.

And I’m already signed up for your blog.

  17. Hi Christine,

you’re a new author to me, but I’m interested in your books.

My heros vary, I usually like the ones who don’t know they are heros, so the unintentional hero.

  20. for me, it’s definitely an alpha hero that does it… as long as he’s not a jerk 🙂

  21. I think I love the reluctant hero… My first ‘hero’ that comes to mind is Revhenge from JR Ward’s Lover Avenged. He is a bad guy and does lots of bad things, but he does them the ‘right’ way… and he does the right thing a lot of the time. I’m not sure if that makes sense to anyone who hasn’t read the book. Haha, I don’t have a way with words =)

  23. Wow, great contest and I loved your post. I really just like a great hero of any kind, but if I were too choose it would probably be the reformed bad boy hero for me. I really enjoy seeing the hero turn himself around to do the right thing.
