SVR Wants To Know
First of all, I hope everyone down in the USA is having a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!! I’m guessing you’re all in a turkey/stuffed yourself coma or out braving the insanity that is Black Friday, lol. The Black Friday sales are even spreading up here to Canada today and I’m still debating about making my way out to see what’s to be had for great sales.
I went and saw Breaking Dawn Part 1 yesterday with my best friend and it was AWESOME! I was impressed with the way that they handled the story-line and with the special effects. I even had tears in my eyes a few times during the wedding, lol. I can’t believe that they’re making us wait till next November for the last movie when they’re already done filming it. That’s just cruel. They should release it in the summer! Pffft… So who all has seen the movie? Care to discuss it in the comments? What did you think? Favorite parts? Cheesy Parts?

I have a question for you all. I’m finding as I get older or have read that many more books in my life, that I am losing interest in books that aren’t written in first person. I just can not seem to get into a book written in third person point of view anymore!? All the “she said” and then “he said” and then “she did…” and “he responded…” Gah! It’s tedious for me now and I have a harder time relating to or caring about the characters when it’s written in third person POV. Does anyone else feel the same way or am I just an eccentric, picky reader? SVR wants to know!

I definitely prefer reading books in the first person. I am currently reading a book by a longtime favorite author and there have been multiple POV and while this is important to the storyline, I do find myself saying “okay move it along” LOL As for he said, she said unless it is a really gripping story no thank you 🙂

The talking werewolves made me cringe, the super imposed baby face was laughable and the back break…ewwww!
Not the best of the films so far but it is still a must watch!
LOL, I know what you’re saying, but how else were they supposed to show those scenes onscreen and stay true to the book/story-line? I just re-read the whole book yesterday and they stayed pretty true to the book I have to say. And at least we were spared the sparkling vampire through-out the sunny honeymoon right? *Grins*
Interesting question about the POVs. I’m just the opposite. I much prefer third person. So much UF is written in 1st person and it kind of annoys me. I love when we get different points of view in the same book. It’s one of the reasons that I don’t usually read several UFs back to back. I find 1st person to be too limiting.
I always find it fascinating to hear about others’ preferences and the reasoning behind them. I guess for me it depends on the author and their writing. I’m not saying that I refuse to pick up and read a book because it’s written in third person, because I have enjoyed some books written with 3rd person POV. A lot of times though, I find myself getting annoyed by it. My best preference would be if the story was split between the two main characters, but seperate chapters written in first person for each character. Does that make any sense? LOL
Alternating or viewpoint told in third person is a pet peeve of mine as well, only a certain group of authors that I have read in the past year managed to make it work smoothly. For my reading it has always been easier and much more pleasurable to have first person POV. Plus it makes more sense when the story flows naturally on the page without extra information on which character is thinking or saying things as they are about to happen. You are not alone and thank you we did have a nice easy Thanksgiving and today raining slowly since before daylight so much needed in our area to relieve dry conditions makes it an even better weekend off.
Agreed that there are only a few authors who have made third person POV work for me as well. Glad to hear that the holiday and the weather both cooperated for you this year! 🙂
I see that trend too. Often times it’s useful to a story to know more than a single character’s POV. My recently released paranormal trilogy had some events that needed to be told by other characters since, like the villain scenes, the main character cannot obviously be there without being strapped to the rail-line with the oncoming engine lights in the distance (twirly mustache here). And it’s often much more interesting to be inside that villain’s head when he constructs the evil device than to just hear about it second hand (when I’m reading I’m thinking “ooh, this is a really bad nasty villain but I see why or how the villain got like this” which makes for a deeper character).
Do some genres have more first person POVs than other genres?
Is there a trend in shifts from third to first person in these heavy categories?
