Robert S. Sadler – Guest Blog & Giveaway

Today I have Urban Fantasy author, Robert S. Sadler, joining us at SVR to celebrate the release of his novel, Secrets Of Blood & Bone, the first in The Q Trilogy! He’s taking over, guest blogging with a giveaway, so be sure to read all the way through to the end and lets give him a warm welcome. 🙂

Sadler.Robert.S

So let me start off by thanking Judi for being an absolutely awesome person and fabulous reviewer. I don’t just say this because she liked my book, breaking into the literary world is extremely difficult and Sidhe Vicious Reviews is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise very cynical industry. So again, thank you!

As silly as it may sound I wrote Secrets of Blood & Bone for people who don’t really like to read. I tried to keep it simple yet exciting, constantly moving but always going somewhere. I wanted to give it a sense of intrigue without being impossible to figure out, and most importantly I wanted to write within the genre without copying someone else’s world. An action packed thrill ride full of original characters with real problems and emotions. Mix all that up with a heaping spoon full of violence and a healthy serving of sex and you have the exact recipe for the kind of book I always wanted to read.

While I have incorporated many of the creatures we have all grown to love reading about over the years, I have put my own twist on many of their origins. Vampires and shape shifters of all kinds were originally created out of hatred and jealousy as part of a master race by the Dark God Brhamoren. Humans and Ogres were both created out of love and necessity by the most caring of all the old Gods, Odgerrin. The Fey and all of Faerie where a product of petty vanity by the beautiful Lamenell, and the mountain giants known as the Jätti were a Matriarchal tribe of warriors created by one so old none know their true origins.

Alongside our usual favorites, completely new characters also grace the pages of my trilogy. The brilliant Tonttu, who manage the finances of the Vanha Rotu, mostly resemble sarcastic Keebler elves with a Napoleon complex. Skritek are the very distant relatives to the Tonttu, but where the Tonttu got the brains, the Skritek got the brawn. Try to imagine furless, reptilian Ewoks in heavy armor with sharks teeth and bad dispositions. They act as the foot soldiers to the Valdosa Skira and supply endless comic relief when they aren’t causing mayhem and destruction. Finally we have the Mazāk Tiem; “The lesser ones” are made up of any supernatural creature that doesn’t possess the appropriate lineage to find itself counted amongst the ranks of the nobility or the warrior clans. While the Valdosa Skira gives these misfits of nature the chance to attain wealth, power, and position through combat, the Vanha Rotu has relegated them to a life of servitude and slavery. Most Mazak Tiem are the product of either cross species breeding or human rape by a supernatural. Until the two societies started recruiting unaffiliated Mazak Tiem, most had no clue of their heritage and often hid out in remote locations where they could avoid civilization. Ever wonder about the snake boy, or the dog faced kid at the circus? Are they Mazak Tiem perhaps?

This is just a taste of the world that I have created. A place where monsters can be heroes and saviors can be villains, where life and death, right and wrong are so intertwined that it’s hard to tell them apart. A place where love can blossom over night and vendettas can last for millennia. This is the world that I love to write about and I sincerely hope you grow to love it as well.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Thank you Rob! Definitely an interesting introduction to the captivating world you’ve created. I know that I’m looking forward to book 2, Revelations Out Of Darkness.

    • Actually “Secrets” was my first book. I am currently working on the sequel which will be available later this year, plus I am working on a serial killer based murder mystery that I will release next year. Thanks for the interest!

  2. Sounds like quite an interesting book! Rob would you please describe the characteristics of the vampires in your story?

    • In my series vampires were the creation of the Dark God Brhamoren. In his attempt to create life the Dark Lord brutally raped a human female. The mother died and the child was born still born. While Brhamoren thought his attempt a failure, a night hag offered to suckle the child on her own blood. As soon as blood touched the child lipps her tiny red eyes popped open and Tiana, mother of all vampires was born. As far as characteristics, my vampires are more or less traditional in their attributes. Immortality, super human strength and speed, ability to cloud minds and a severe allergic reaction to silver. They are essentially cruel at heart and hope to someday rule the whole of the human race in order to use them as both slaves and food.

    • One other thing, I would just like to point out that vampires play a very small part in the first book but will be a major factor in the sequel do out later this year.

  11. This sounds very interesing. I am always fascinated how you came up with art work on the cover. Was it before or after the book was finished?

    Comment by Doreen R | September 6, 2010 | Reply

    • I actually created the cover after I finished the book and was ready for publishing. If you read the book you’ll find that the emerald green eyes are part of the main characters tranformation and are in fact a signifigant characteristic for what he is to become. That was part of the “Secret” and thus I had the eye sort of peeking through at you. The rest was just my interpretation of elements of the book, swirling smoke in the darkness, the blood like background and tribal thorns all suit the flavor of the book.

Robert book sounds as if he has put a lot of though into his characters but also as if it will need quite a bit of thought for the reader to get all the creatures and their relationship correct.

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  20. I have yet to have anyone complain about it being confusing or hard to follow, actually quite the opposite. Initially the characters are broken up into social and political groups, their really isn’t good or bad with the exception of the main protagonist. You’ll just have to check it out and see what you think.

    Comment by Robert S Sadler | September 7, 2010 | Reply

    • I agree. It does contain a very detailed world & characters but it wasn’t hard to follow at all. 🙂

  21. I’ve read Secrets and loved it. I thought it was really an awesome book. Once I started to read it, I found it hard to put down, stayed up late many nights to finish it. To be honest it is not the type of book I normally read, but it may have opened up a whole new genre for me.
Im very excited and waiting for the next book to come out, I will buy it the day it’s available!!!!

Hope everyone will pick it up and read it, the story and the writing is really wonderful!

I am new to this website. But have been following Mr Sadler for quite some time now. I wish him the best of luck.

    • Recommendations can be tricky since everyone’s opinions vary. I personally enjoy a darker story, something with more grit than romance. With that said, of the more current Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance series out there my favorite is The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. I also like Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series as well as the Meredith Gentry books, though I have to admit they both run a little too heavy on the sex for me. Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files were excellent; obviously the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris are very good. I also liked Kim Harrison’s The Hollows books although they were leaning towards being almost YA in nature. My absolute favorite of all time is the Sonja Blue series by Nancy Collins, also her stand alone novel Wild Blood is excellent. They are very dark, and very graphic, leaning towards a true horror book, but right up my alley. Hope all of this helps, and I hope you will give my book a try, the sequel is do out later this year with the finale coming out next summer.
